Jacques seized Tommy’s arm and got him to his feet. “Come on, we’ve got another train to catch,” he whispered. “That was too close for comfort.”

They’d walked barely twenty yards when a shot rang out. Jacques instinctively crouched down. He glanced round and saw that the Gestapo had ordered a soldier to fire his rifle into the air. Their deception was being tested. Then Jacques realised Tommy had remained standing, unmoved, perfectly still, seemingly oblivious to the shot. It was enough to satisfy the Nazi. Jacques rose to his feet, grabbed Tommy’s arm once more and hurried on. “I must have trained you better than I’d thought,” he whispered.
